More about this story

Sheridan LeFanu's most famous works include 'In A Glass Darkly', 'Carmilla', and 'Uncle Silas'. His family are descended from the Huguenots who fled to Ireland in the 18th century. Despite training in Law and succeeding to the bar in Trinity college, he failed to pursue the career of a lawyer, and chose instead to enter journalism and fiction. With constant financial troubles, he ran a series of newspapers in Dublin, which he often used to publish his work in serial form. Through the magic of the internet, many of his works are now available for free online and on ebook here http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/272. If you have never checked out his work before, it is a genuine treat and an utterly different kind of Irish literature.
