More about this story
The Animal Gangs emerged from the grinding poverty of the festering, crime-ridden tenements of 1930s Dublin, and constituted the violent underbelly of Ireland's capital city at the time. The nickname reflects both the savagery of their regular clashes with other gangs, the police and the paramilitaries and a brutal street culture that eventually passed into urban legend.
