Rev. David McDonnel
St Werburghs Church

Werburgh's church has risen and fallen with the times, and here the Reverend David McDonnel talks us through it's biggest fall from grace - when it became entangled in the 1798 rebellion and suffered downgrading, partial demolition and the suspicion of being a seat of betrayal.

More about St Werburghs Church

St. Werburgh's, built originally in the 12th. century, is one of the oldest churches in Dublin. It is situated inside the walls of Viking Dublin, and beside the Wood Quay site; and was named after a Saxon Princess, Werburga. Although there are other churches and monasteries named after this Princess, it is generally accepted that the Dublin church is the oldest.
