Christchurch cathedral was founded sometime after 1028 by King Sitric, overlooking the old Viking settlement at wood quay. It is claimed as the seat of both the Church of Ireland and Catholic archbishops. The bellringing at Christchurch is well known to anyone who has walked around the city. Every New years eve, the bells ring in the new year for the city with a special performance by the bellringers.
