The landing of the Thurleyhides is recorded in the chartularies of St Mary's Abbey of 1331, which mentions 'a huge crowd of fine whales appeared for sure at Ringsend, such as was never seen for several centuries past'. In Ulysses, Joyce also makes mention of the giant whales 'A school of thurlehide whales, stranded in hot noon, spouting, hobbling in the shadows'
