More about The Coombe

The Coombe was once the site of a large maternity hospital (which has since moved to Dolphin's Barn). It was founded in 1770 after a pregnant woman froze to death in this spot while attempting to reach a maternity hospital across the city. Charles Dickens visited Dublin in the 1850's on a reading tour, as he tried to recoup money to pay a huge tax bill from America. He later published a series of observations on the city.
