More about Mount Joy Square
Mountjoy square is the only true 'square' in the city (the other 4 are rectangles), and was laid out by Luke Gardiner in the late 18th century. One peculiar thing to occur there was the discovery of oil in 1903, which created great excitement that a vast source of wealth lay beneath the area. It turned out to be commercially useless oil. Michael Collins often stayed at 1 Mountjoy Square while on the run. Once, after it was raided by British soldiers, he still returned to have his laundry done.
