George Friedrich Handel was a German-born British composer who rose to fame with his popular operas. However, after a physical breakdown, he switched to writing choral pieces, specializing in setting biblical texts to music, the most famous of these being "Messiah". Handel is still viewed as one of the most popular composers of all time, having pieces dedicated to him by such composers as Ludvig Van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms.
